Black Love Day

One week from the holiday, Black Love Day, I am reminded that I only learned of it a year or two ago.  Ayo Handy-Kendi, an author and breathologist, founded Black Love Day in 1993.  Her initial motivation for creating the holiday followed the murder of Malcolm X and her desire to encourage peace and end violence.  She had a simple wish, for everyone to express love for 24 hours and to engage in atonement and forgiveness.  There are five tenets of Black Love Day and include love for the creator, self, family, community and race.

Our white and other allies are also able to participate by “showing love in action” by challenging themes of privilege, bias, systemic oppression and microaggressions.

February 13, 2023 celebrates 30 years since Black Love Day was created.  Let’s prepare for next week by spreading love for our creator, for ourselves, for our families, for our communities and our beautiful black culture.  Let’s also spread the world so that this beautiful holiday is known by many more in the black community but also by everyone.
