Why Black Therapy and Wellness is Needed NOW.

Now more than ever Black communities need to be seen from a culturally relevant and respectful lens.  We see and are living the negative impact of racism (discrimination, prejudice and microaggressions), multiple conflicting roles and stress exacerbated by the current pandemic.  The pandemic highlighted a sad reality of a lack of providers of color which caused further disparities for an already disadvantaged group.  This void became ever more apparent when African American/Black/BIPOC individuals and couples began seeking out mental health services.  More than ever, people of color are acknowledging poor work/life balances, an understanding of the lack of appreciation of one’s cultural identity at work as well as their contribution to the company’s success.  We are also witnessing problematic and unhealthy relationships familially, romantically and platonically.  And being disproportionately hit related to Covid-19, pre-existing conditions created by living in a society built on historical racism, we are exposed to the results of increasing illness and stress. So it’s definitely time.  And the time is NOW.
